PM promises early reconstruction of Pungyen Monastery

KATHMANDU: Chumnubri Rural Municipality of Gorkha has drawn the attention of the federal government for the reconstruction of Pungyen Monastery in Lho village of Chumnubri-2 which was completely destroyed by fire last week.

Nima Lama, chairman of Chum Nubri Rural Municipality, Saturday Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal and submitted a memo, demanding that the government take the needful initiative for reconstruction of the monastery which is believed to be more than 200 years old.

Lho village lies in the electoral constituency of Prime Minister Dahal.

“Receiving the memo, Prime Minister Dahal said the government will take needful initiatives for the restoration of the ancient monastery through the Department of Archaeology, Lama told Himal Press.

Centuries-old Buddhist artifacts have been lost in a devastating fire that broke out at Pungyen Monastery last Tuesday. An electrical short circuit is believed to have caused the fire.

According to preliminary estimate, the fire caused a loss of around Rs 300 million.
