KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who is currently in New York to participate in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, began high-level meetings on Saturday.
Prime Minister Oli met UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Saturday evening. During the meeting, Oli expressed gratitude to Guterres for his recent visit to Nepal and urged action on climate justice for the country. In response, Guterres expressed his commitment to advocate for compensation from the international community for damages caused by melting Himalayan glaciers in Nepal.
Earlier, Oli met with UN Under-Secretary-General Rabab Fatima, who is also the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States.
On Sunday, Oli is scheduled to co-chair a session of ‘The Summit of the Future’ and also address the plenary session. He will meet with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oli will hold bilateral meetings with his Bhutanese counterpart Tshering Tobgay as well as Kuwait’s Crown Prince Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
PM Oli is also scheduled to meet the Indian Prime Minister on Sunday. The meeting is expected to cover various aspects of Nepal-India relations.
On Monday, PM Oli is scheduled to address the “Lead-Free Future: Partnership Launch and Pledging Event” at UNICEF and speak at Columbia University on “Nepal’s Journey of Democracy and Economic Prosperity.”
Oli will participate in the General Assembly on Tuesday. He will also meet with USAID Administrator Samantha Power on the same day. Likewise, Oli has scheduled meetings with European Council President Charles Michel, Samoan Prime Minister Fiame Naomi, and the President and Prime Minister of Finland.
Oli is also scheduled to meet Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) CEO Alice Albright on Wednesday. He will participate in the ‘High-Level Plenary Meeting on Addressing the Existential Threats Posed by Sea-Level Rise’ and the ‘High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR),’ among other events.
He will also meet Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus and attend a reception hosted by US President Joe Biden.
According to the ministry, Oli is scheduled to have bilateral meetings with the Prime Ministers of Qatar, Pakistan, and Laos, as well as the President of the General Assembly, Philemon Yang, on Thursday. He will address the UN General Assembly on the same day.
On Friday, PM Oli will address Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum on ‘Nepal’s Perspective: From Transitional Justice to Climate Justice’ and attend a reception organized by the Embassy of Nepal in Washington.
