POKHARA: Preparations for the restoration of Barahi Temple in Pokhara have begun after the iconic temple tilted about three inches toward the southern side.
The temple had started tilting after the 2015 earthquakes, say local people.
Hikmat Kunwar of the Barahi Temple Management Committee said the committee started preparation for the renovation to avoid loss of life and property. “The estimated cost of renovation is around Rs 14 million,” he added.
The iconic temple, which sits on a small island on Fewa Lake, is a popular tourist destination and attracts hundreds of tourists and pilgrims daily.
Late King Mahendra built the temple in 1060.
The committee is investing Rs 11.5 million for restoration, while the department is chipping in with Rs 2.5 million.
According to Kunwar, the temple will be renovated by bringing skilled craftsmen from different parts of the country. “We will sign an agreement for restoration of the temple with the Department of Archaeology by this week,” he added.
