Physical infrastructure, energy ministers pledge full support to MCC projects

KATHMANDU: The Visiting CEO of Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), Alice Albright, has received assurances on the timely implementation of MCC projects in Nepal from two key ministers.

Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Prakash Jwala, and Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation, Shakti Bahadur Basnet, on Monday, told Albright not to doubt the implementation of MCC projects endorsed by the government and the sovereign parliament.

A delegation of MCC led by Albright separately met the two ministers on Monday.

Nepal is executing two projects under the MCC: the upgrading of an 80-kilometer section of the East-West Highway and the construction of a 315-kilometer 400 kV transmission line along with its three substations. While the road project comes under the jurisdiction of the Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport, the transmission line project falls under the purview of the Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation.

“The government will leave no stone unturned for the successful implementation of the MCC project,” Minister Jwala assured the MCC delegation. “There are some problems in the projects, but they will be resolved once the project implementation begins.”

In response, Albright shared her happiness over the smooth implementation of MCC projects. “I am delighted to see the positive attitude of the Government of Nepal toward MCC projects,” she added.

Likewise, Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation, Shakti Bahadur Basnet, told the MCC delegation that the government would extend full support to the construction of the transmission line being implemented with MCC’s grant.

Stating that the process for the acquisition of land required for the construction of the transmission line and sub-stations has already been initiated, Minister Basnet said that the government has accorded ‘national pride’ status to the project.

Albright arrived in Nepal on a five-day visit on Sunday.
