PAC forms panel to probe election police uniform procurement

KATHMANDU: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the House of Representatives has formed a subcommittee to study the procurement of uniforms for election police personnel.

A meeting of the committee held on Friday formed the nine-member study subcommittee under the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Manish Jha.

Ain Mahar, Yogesh Gauchan Thakali, Aren Rai, Khagendra Sunar, Khushbu Oli, Ramesh Kumar Malla, Ganesh Dhimal and Mahendra Bahadur Shahi are the members of the subcommittee.

The subcommittee has been tasked with studying complaints alleging irregularities in the procurement of uniforms for election police personnel and submitting a report.
PAC Chairperson Bharat Bahadur Khadka said the committee would take into consideration the subcommittee’s suggestions while taking a decision on the complaint.

At the meeting, RSP lawmaker Khagendra Sunar proposed that he be appointed coordinator of the subcommittee, saying that he had been consistently raising concerns over irregularities in the police. He argued that there would be no justification for forming the subcommittee while excluding him.

Some lawmakers from other parties, however, argued that Sunar appeared to have a role similar to that of a complainant and therefore should not be included in the subcommittee. Following the discussion, Sunar was included as a member with the consent of all members.

The PAC had received a complaint alleging irregularities worth more than Rs 600 million in the procurement of uniforms for election police.
