Opposition to ordinance meaningless, says Nagarik Unmukti chairperson

KATHMANDU: Nagarik Unmukti Party Chairperson Ranjita Shrestha Monday said it was meaningless to oppose the ordinance that the government brought on Sunday to withraw cases against cadres and leaders of different political groups.

She claimed that the ordinance was brought not to release Resham Chaudhary but all political prisoners. Shrestha thanked the government for its preparation to give justice to her husband, albeit late.

After meeting Chaudhary at the Dillibazar prizon on Monday, Shrestha said: “The government brought this ordinance after lot of discussions.”

Chaudhary is serving his time in Dillibazaar prison after the District Court, Kailali, convicted him of masterminding the Tiakpur incident of 2015 which claims nine lives.

Dipayal High Court has also upheld the district court’s verdict.

Nagrik Unmukti won three seats in the November 20 polls, while Lalbir Chaudhary – Resham’s father – won as the independent candidate. The party’s four seats will be cricual for Sher Bahadur Deuba as the Nepali Congress President looks for missing pieces of the jigshaw to form the next government.

The ordinance, however, has drawn widespread criticism. Even Nepali Congress leaders, including two general secretary, has opposed the ordinance, asking the government to withdraw it.
