KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has resigned. Oli submitted his resignation to President Ram Chandra Paudel on Tuesday afternoon.
In his resignation letter to the President, Oli wrote: “Appointed on July 15, 2024, under Article 76 (2) of the Constitution of Nepal, I hereby resign from the post of Prime Minister, effective today, in accordance with Article 77(1)(a) of the Constitution, to pave the way for a constitutional political course and further initiatives to resolve the crisis.”
Oli’s decision came after chiefs of the security agencies reportedly told him they could not guarantee the safety of citizens if he continued to hold office.
During a security briefing earlier in the day, Chief of Army Staff Ashok Raj Sigdel and heads of other security agencies had advised Oli to resign. Inspector Generals of Nepal Police Chandra Kuber Khapung and Armed Police Force Raju Aryal, as well as the chief of the National Investigation Department Hutaraj Thapa, were also present in the briefing.
Oli had initially rejected the request. “Whatever the circumstances, I will face them. I will not resign,” a participant of the meeting quoted PM Oli as saying. “You just follow the government’s orders without hesitation. I know why this movement has started, but you don’t.”
The chiefs of the security agencies had told the Prime Minister that, while they could make efforts to protect political leaders, they could not place themselves in a position where ordinary citizens would end up being killed.
At least 19 young people have lost their lives after security personnel used force to suppress the Gen Z Protest that began on Monday. Protesters have torched homes of many political leaders and offices of different political parties to protest the killings.
