KATHMANDU: The Nepal Stock Exchange (Nepse) index snapped a six-day losing streak on Tuesday, gaining 9.24 points to close at 2,522.66 points.
Although the index dipped initially, it soon recovered and reached an intraday high of 2,536.76 points. The index pared some gains as the session progressed but still ended the day 0.36% higher.
Despite the modest recovery in the benchmark index, market turnover fell to Rs 2.91 billion, with 7.61 million shares traded through 48,341 transactions. This is the lowest turnover volume since July 15, when shares worth Rs 2.78 billion were traded on the bourse.
Market breadth was positive on Tuesday, as 181 stocks advanced, 84 declined and 12 remained unchanged.
Mathillo Mailungkhola Jalvidyut Ltd posted the highest gain of 7.15% during the session. Next were MBL Equity Fund and Emerging Nepal Ltd, with gains of 5.88% and 4.85%, respectively. On the other hand, Upakar Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha led the losing stocks with a loss of 8.48%. Ghorahi Cement Industries Ltd and CYC Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha Ltd were next, with losses of 5.53% and 5.39%, respectively.
Solu Hydropower Ltd topped the turnover chart, with total transactions worth Rs 138.27 million. Next were Shivam Cement and Ankhu Khola Jalvidyut Company Ltd, with turnovers of Rs 136.39 million and Rs 103.62 million, respectively.
Except for the Manufacturing & Processing sub-index, which posted a nominal loss, all sub-indices ended in the green on Tuesday. The biggest gain came from the Hydropower sub-index, which closed 1.01% higher. Next were the Life Insurance and Non-life Insurance sub-indices, with gains of 0.89% and 0.83%, respectively.
