Nepal welcomes Islamabad MoU between US, Iran

KATHMANDU: The government has welcomed the signing of “The Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding Between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran”.

“We welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire on 8 April 2026 and are encouraged to witness the successful culmination of diplomatic efforts in the signing of the United States-Iran Peace Deal by the Presidents of the United States and Iran,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Thursday. “The Government of Nepal has been closely monitoring the developments in West Asia since the onset of the conflict, which has had far-reaching implications for the global economy, including Nepal.”

The ministry also added that Nepal remains hopeful that the Peace Deal will contribute to lasting peace and stability in West Asia, while facilitating the normalization of the maritime navigation affected by the conflict.

“Nepal also deeply appreciates the pivotal role played by the countries mediating the process and reiterates its support to all the efforts by the international community aimed at promoting peace and stability in the region and beyond,” it added.

The MoU was digitally signed by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, as well as by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as a mediator.
