Nepal Police gets Rs 8 billion election budget

KATHMANDU: Nepal Police has been allocated Rs 7.99 billion to provide security for the upcoming federal and provincial elections.

Of the total allocation, Rs 5.86 billion will go to pay wages and other expenses of temporary police personnel that Nepal Police will recruit for the elections.

Additional Inspector General Deepak Thapa said the finance ministry has approved a budgetary allocation of Rs 7.99 billion for Nepal Police.

Nepal Police plans to mobilize 71,693 police personnel and 115,000 temporary police personnel.

Nepal Police had recruited 100,000 temporary police personnel for the local body election held in March. It is recruiting an additional 15,000 for the November 20 election.

Temporary police personnel will get around Rs 50,000 each in salary and allowances.

The government has already said that temporary police personnel hired for the local body election held in March will be given priority while recruiting temporary police personnel for the November 20 election.

According to the police headquarters, Nepal Police personnel will be provided with a daily allowance for 13 days. Likewise, they will get Rs 300 each as tiffin allowance for four days.

The finance ministry has allowed Nepal Police to procure 180 motor vehicles for the election. The police force can purchase vehicles worth a maximum of Rs 5 million.

Nepal Police plans to deploy 2,795 motor vehicles for the election. It has been permitted to take 1,050 motor vehicles on hire for 12 days by paying rent of a maximum of Rs 10,000 per day each.

The police force is also buying 10,000 batons by paying Rs 200 each.
