Nepal earn first win in ICC Women’s Challenge Trophy

KATHMANDU: Nepal secured their first victory in the ICC Women’s Challenge Trophy with a commanding 50-run win over Italy in Kigali, Rwanda, on Sunday.

Batting first at the Gahanga Cricket Ground, Nepal posted a below-par total of 112 runs, losing eight wickets in the allotted 20 overs. However, they defended the total, bundling out Italy for just 62 runs.

Rubina Chhetri led the attack for Nepal, claiming four wickets in just 2.4 overs. She conceded only four runs in her superb spell. Kabita Kunwar picked up two wickets, while Manisha Upadhyay, Riya Sharma, and Rachana Chaudhary chipped in with one wicket each.

For Italy, Thilini Fernando top-scored with 22 runs, and Pasindi Kanankege added 12. Other Italian batters failed to reach double figures.

Earlier, Nepal posted 112 runs in their allotted 20 overs. Pooja Mahato anchored the innings with an unbeaten 48 off 45 balls. Samjhana Khadka (16), Bindu Rawal (15), and captain Indu Barma (10) also made valuable contributions with the bat.

Emilia Bartram claimed three wickets for Italy, while Thilini Fernando, Pasindi Kanankege, Ilenia Sims, Alexia Kontopirakis, and Kumudu Peddrick took one wicket each.
