KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) President Gagan Kumar Thapa has said that the party will defend its position in court as the Special General Convention was legal and conducted in accordance with the party statute.
Addressing the opening session of the 2nd National Convention of the Nepal Democratic Indigenous Nationalities Federation on Friday, Thapa said the party’s Central Working Committee meeting scheduled for August 9 will discuss the Supreme Court’s latest order regarding the Special General Convention and finalize the party’s official position.
He said the court’s decision has provided the party with another opportunity to prove that the Special General Convention was lawful and in line with the party statute.
Stating that no one is above the party statute, Thapa said the party is legally obligated to hold its next General Convention within the scheduled timeframe, by mid-December.
He added that the party would work to strengthen the organization by bringing everyone together. Thapa said he remains committed to accommodating all sections of the party and fostering unity.
The NC President added that the NC, as the main opposition, has a responsibility to hold the government accountable and safeguard the constitution. He warned that failure to recognize the constitution’s sensitivities during the amendment process could push the country into a crisis at any time.
Thapa also argued that the government’s approach to constitutional amendment could lead the country toward serious conflict. “However, the NC will continue to exert pressure and closely monitor the process,” he added.
