KATHMANDU: The Koshi Province Committee of the Nepali Congress has recommended eight names as probable candidates for the National Assembly election from the province.
The meeting of the province committee made the recommendations based on suggestions received from district committees, according to a province committee leader.
The names recommended by the province committee include leaders who suffered defeat in the election for the House of Representatives and provincial assemblies held in November last year.
The province committee has recommended the names of Krishna Prasad Sitaula, Mahesh Acharya, Dr. Minendra Rijal, Sujata Koirala, Dila Sangraula, Gururaj Ghimire, Umesh Jung Rayamajhi, Ang Gelu Sherpa, and Rukmini Koirala.
Sitaula and Koirala were defeated in the Jhapa-3 and Morang-2 constituencies, respectively, of the House of Representatives, while Ghimire suffered defeat in the provincial assembly election from Morang-4 (A) constituency.
Two seats of ‘Others’ and the women’s quota of the National Assembly from Koshi Province are becoming vacant. Given that the ruling coalition is forming an alliance in the National Assembly election, NC is likely to get one of the two seats.
NC sources say party President Sher Bahadur Deuba is keen to have Sitaula in the upper house. He is said to have staked claim to the post of National Assembly Chairperson.
