National Security Council recommends army deployment for HoR polls

KATHMANDU: The National Security Council (NSC) has decided to recommend the deployment of the army for the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) election scheduled for March 5.

The 41st meeting of the Council, held on Thursday, decided to recommend to the cabinet the deployment of the Nepal Army, as per Article 266(1) of the Constitution of Nepal, 2015, to ensure that the House of Representatives election is conducted in a free, fair, and fear-free environment.

The meeting also discussed and approved the Council’s 8th annual report, with necessary amendments.

The report will now be submitted to President Ram Chandra Paudel, according to Suman Raj Aryal, Secretary at the Ministry of Defense and Member Secretary of the National Security Council.

The Council also deliberated on various potential challenges to national security, recent developments at the national and international level that could impact security, and the future strategies that need to be adopted, according to the National Security Council Secretariat.

The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Sushila Karki, was attended by Minister for Finance Rameshore Prasad Khanal, Minister for Home Affairs Om Prakash Aryal, Chief Secretary Ek Narayan Aryal, Chief of Army Staff Ashok Raj Shigdel, among other officials.
