Narayan Dahal elected National Assembly chair

KATHMANDU: Narayan Dahal of CPN (Maoist Center) has been elected as the chairperson of the National Assembly.

Thrity-nine members of the upper house voted in favor of the proposal to elect Narayan Dahal as the National Assembly chairperson. Seventeen members voted against the proposal.

Earlier, the proposal to elect Yuvaraj Sharma of Nepali Congress as the National Assembly chairperson was rejected by a majority vote.

A total of 56 members participated in the voting, according to the Federal Parliament Secretariat.

Dahal replaces Ganesh Prasad Timisilna of CPN-UML, who completed his six-year term on March 3, as the National Assembly chairperson.

Dahal, the brother of CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, was the common candidate of the ruling alliance in the election, while Sharma had the support of the Loktantrik Samajbadi Party.
