Minister Khanal off to New York to attend 81st UNGA

KATHMANDU: Minister for Foreign Affairs Shishir Khanal left for New York, the United States, on Sunday evening to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Speaking with reporters at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu before his departure, Khanal said Nepal would strongly raise the issue of climate disasters that Nepal has been suffering during the General Assembly. He added that the global community needs to recognize the responsibilities created by climate change and greenhouse gas emissions.

“Nepal needs to call for stronger international mechanisms to address these issues,” he added.

Khanal said Nepal would also raise issues related to United Nations reform and peace at the General Assembly.

In addition to attending high-level sessions, Minister Khanal will represent Nepal at various ministerial meetings and side events in New York.

During his visit, he is scheduled to meet representatives and senior officials of various friendly countries.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah is scheduled to travel to New York on Tuesday to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
