Lawmakers call for impartial investigation into Sunsari incident

KATHMANDU: Lawmakers have called for the formation of a judicial inquiry commission to investigate the recent incident in Sunsari.

Speaking after opposition lawmakers stood up at the start of the meeting of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Nischal Rai demanded an impartial investigation into the incident. Rai also urged the government to take action against those spreading misinformation about the incident on social media.

CPN-UML lawmaker Guru Prasad Baral also stressed the need for an impartial investigation to ensure those responsible are brought to justice and to prevent similar incidents from recurring.

Welcoming the restoration of calm in Sunsari and other districts, Baral said it could be possible through the collective efforts of all stakeholders. “Compensation can be provided for homes and vehicles damaged in the violence. However, the psychological trauma suffered by business owners cannot easily be repaired,” Baral said.

Similarly, Balawati Sharma of the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) praised the collective efforts to bring the situation in Sunsari under control. “However, the incident should be investigated,” she said.

Sharma added that the victims were expecting the prime minister to visit them in person. “The government must take responsibility for the incident,” she added.

Harka Raj Rai of the Shram Sanskriti Party (SSP) also called for a factual investigation into the Sunsari incident. “We need to create conditions that would prevent similar incidents in the future,” he added.
