KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Khagendra Karna has urged the government to take steps to control the wild elephant menace in different parts of Saptari.
Speaking during the zero hour of the House of Representatives on Thursday, Karna said a herd of wild elephants has caused significant damage in Mahuli Mohanpur of Agnisair Krishnasavaran Rural Municipality-6 in Saptari.
He said dozens of elephants entered the village at around 10 pm on Monday and destroyed standing crops.
According to Karna, the herd remained inside the village until 3 am and destroyed maize crops ready for harvest as well as paddy seedlings prepared for planting.
“With crops meant to sustain families for the year destroyed, affected farmers are deeply worried,” Karna said, adding that farmers in the area have been facing the menace of wild animals for the past 35 years.
“I urge the government to introduce effective plans to control wild elephants at the earliest,” he added.
