KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has begun vehicle pollution testing in collaboration with traffic police.

The KMC Office has urged vehicle owners to take stock of the condition of their vehicles and carry out necessary repairs.

KMC has issued the Environment and Natural Resources Act, 2020, Pollution Control Standards, 2024, and Waste Collection and Transportation Procedure, 2024 for environmental improvement.

The metropolis has set separate indicators for petrol and diesel vehicles based on their manufacturing date. According to these provisions, four-wheelers manufactured until 1980 must have a maximum carbon monoxide level of 4.5% (by volume). Similarly, vehicles manufactured in or after 1981 must have a maximum carbon monoxide level of 3%. For three-wheelers manufactured until 1991, the maximum carbon monoxide level must be 4.5%. The maximum carbon monoxide level allowed for two-wheelers is 4.5%.

For diesel vehicles manufactured until 1994, the smoke density must not exceed 75 Hartridge Smoke Units (HSU). Such density for vehicles manufactured in or after 1995 has been set at 65 HSU.

During testing, if readings exceed these specified units, the vehicle is considered to be outside pollution standards.
