SURKHET: The Karnali Province Government has made public its policies and programs for the fiscal year 2024/25.

Province Chief Tilak Pariyar presented the policies and programs of the provincial government during a meeting of the Karnali Province Assembly on Wednesday.

The provincial government has prioritized agriculture, health, tourism, and infrastructure with the slogan ‘Prosperous Karnali with Good Governance and Social Justice: A Socialist-Oriented System with Social, Economic, and Physical Development.’

The government has unveiled plans to open one farmer’s school in each local unit to teach local farmers to produce organic fertilizers. Additionally, the plan includes providing subsidies on the production, transportation and sales of organic fertilizers and bio-pesticides, implementing a mobile technical assistance program to provide on-site technical support to farmers, and setting up an agricultural quarantine at Babai, the entry point of Surkhet.

The policies and programs also mention implementing special initiatives related to food and nutrition security and livelihood under the Karnali Prosperity Project, targeting landless, marginalized, and deprived groups, as well as families affected by the Jajarkot earthquake.

The province government has stated that it will prioritize developing infrastructure such as access roads, water supply, and electricity supply for industries and tourism projects. Additionally, it aims to develop and promote adventure tourism activities like rock climbing, paragliding, bungee jumping, rafting, ultra-marathons, Himalayan trail races, and skiing in coordination with local units.

The province government also intends to take necessary steps to develop Surkhet Airport as a provincial hub for air transport and to operate regular flights to remote airfields in the province.

Furthermore, the government plans to upgrade the Karnali Highway, which is of strategic importance to the province, and build the Karnali and Bheri corridor roads in cooperation and coordination with the federal government. According to the policies and programs, the government will prioritize the construction of the Mulpani-Ranighat-Telpani and Bhurigaun road, which links Karnali Province with Lumbini Province. It has also committed to keeping excavators, rollers, tippers, and infrastructure ambulances on standby for regular maintenance and upkeep of strategic roads in the province.
