Karnali floods and landslides: 19 still missing

SURKHET: Forty-one people died in Karnali Province due to floods and landslides caused by incessant rain for about a week since October 5.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Planning of Karnali Province, 10 people died in Jumla, seven in Kalikot, three each in Jajarkot and Salyan, eight each in Humla and Mugu, and one each in Jajarkot and Dolpa due to floods and landslides.

Nineteen people, including 16 from Kalikot district, are still missing. They were swept away by landslides while attending the cremation of a neighbor. Likewise, one each from Dailekh, Dolpa and Jumla are missing.

According to the ministry, 2,234 houses were completely destroyed in the floods and landslides while another 2,662 have sustained partial damage.  Similarly, 22 schools in the province have sustained partial damage. Floods and landslides also swept away 273 domesticated animals.

Meanwhile, the province government has provided compensation to 765 families who lost their homes in floods and landslides through the concerned local units.
