JUMLA: Jumla saw livestock sales worth more than Rs 160 million this Dashain.
Bir Bahadur Rawal, chief of the Animal Husbandry Development Branch at Chandannath Municipality, said sales of sheep, goats and buffalo in the Khalanga market area alone amounted to Rs 163,231,000.
A total of 7,928 animals, mainly goats and sheep, were sold during Dashain. Sheep sales accounted for Rs 152,323,000, while goats worth Rs 7,792,000 were sold during the festival. Buffaloes worth Rs 3,116,000 were traded during Dashain.
Local sheep fetched prices ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 28,000, with an average price of Rs 19,000. Similarly, goats were sold for between Rs 8,000 and Rs 24,000. Buffaloes were sold at prices ranging from Rs 26,000 to Rs 50,000.
The import of sheep and mountain goats from Tibet in the district has stopped since 2012.
According to the District Animal Hospital and Veterinary Services Office, the sheep population in the district stands at 88,000.
In recent years, the livestock trade has expanded beyond the main bazaar area. Smaller markets like Gothijyula in Kanakasundari, Narakot in Sinja, Jugad and Bagbazar in Hima, Raralihee in Tila, Litakot in Tatopani, Lasi Bazaar and Urthuchautara in Patarashi and Manisanghu in Guthichauri Rural Municipality also recorded significant animal trade during Dashain.
