KATHMANDU: Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Nepal Ram Kumar Sharma has resigned from his position, taking moral responsibility for the party’s poor performance in the March 5 elections.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Sharma said he decided to step down following the party’s failure to secure a single seat in the 2026 House of Representatives elections.
Describing the outcome as a reflection of collective incompetence and inefficiency, Sharma noted that the party once built on the foundation of the Madhes movement and holding 52 seats had now shrunk to nothing.
He said his resignation was guided by moral accountability and respect for the public mandate, acknowledging the verdict delivered by voters.
JSP Nepal failed to win a single seat in the House of Representatives. It also failed to cross the threshold of 3% of proportional representation (PR) votes.
In 2022, the party had won 12 first past the post seats. It had secured 421,314 PR votes in 2022.
