Industrialist Binod Chaudhary announces candidacy for NC vice president

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) leader and industrialist Binod Chaudhary has announced his candidacy for the post of party vice president.

Chaudhary announced his candidacy for vice president at the party’s 15th General Convention underway in Kathmandu.

“We no longer need merely attractive slogans; we need new economic thinking, clear policies, capable implementation, accountable governance and leadership that delivers results. This is the time to transform Nepal into a production-oriented, job-creating and innovation-driven competitive economy by integrating the energy of youth, the aspirations of the new generation and the knowledge of experienced leadership,” Chaudhary said in a social media post. “With this vision, this belief and a firm commitment to putting it into practice, I have decided to contest for the post of vice president at the ongoing 15th General Convention.”

Chaudhary is the chairperson of Chaudhary Group, a conglomerate involved in businesses ranging from automobiles and fast food to cement, telecommunications, financial services, real estate, electronics and hospitality. He is also the country’s only Forbes-listed billionaire.

He said the NC should bring economic development agendas to the center of politics, address the aspirations of young people and lead the country’s development through economic transformation.

“The country cannot be transformed by doing ‘politics for the sake of politics.’ For this, we need to work on clear plans for economic prosperity. I am ready to take responsibility for achieving economic prosperity,” he said.

Chaudhary argued that the need of the hour is to build on BP Koirala’s far-sighted political vision and the foundation for economic development laid by Subarna Shumsher Rana. He said he would make every possible effort to realize the dreams of BP Koirala and Subarna Shumsher.

“We should no longer delay Nepal’s economic transformation. We have gone through numerous phases of political change, but the pace of economic development, job creation and prosperity has not been as expected,” he said. “Recognizing this reality, I have been continuously working with NC President Gagan Thapa on the agendas of economic transformation and development.”
