House panel rejects Malaysia ambassador nominee, puts Japan hearing on hold

KATHMANDU: The Parliamentary Hearing Committee (PHC) has rejected the nomination of Chudamani Kharel as Nepal’s ambassador to Malaysia.

PHC Secretary Tul Bahadur Kandel said the parliamentary panel turned down Kharel’s nomination following his parliamentary hearing on Wednesday.

During the hearing, committee members raised several questions against Kharel, including concerns about alleged financial dealings. Kharel denied all the allegations against him. He challenged the committee to produce evidence substantiating any claims of improper transactions.

Earlier, the committee rejected the recommendation of Giri Bahadur Sunar as ambassador to Saudi Arabia.

Complaints had been filed against Sunar over allegations of domestic violence, financial dealings and conduct allegedly inconsistent with diplomatic standards.

Meanwhile, the committee has put on hold the hearing on the nomination of Jigyan Kumar Thapa as ambassador to Japan over allegations that he had obtained permanent residency (PR) in Japan. Thapa has claimed that he has already renounced his Japanese PR status.

Committee secretary Kandel said the committee had sought documents from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to investigate the complaint against Thapa.

“The nominations for Malaysia and Saudi Arabia have been rejected, while the hearing on the nominee for Japan has been put on hold,” Kandel said. “Further examination is necessary, and we have requested documents from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.”

He said the hearing would likely take place only after the Dashain holidays, which begin on Saturday.
