KATHMANDU: The meeting of top leaders of the major political parties organized to resolve the ongoing obstruction of parliamentary proceedings concluded on Sunday without yielding any decisive outcome.
Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire conducted two rounds of discussions with Prime Minister and Chairman of CPN (Maoist Centre) Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, Chairman of CPN-UML KP Sharma Oli, and whips from major political parties on Sunday. However, both meetings ended conclusively.
As a result, the meeting of the House of Representatives session has been adjourned until 3 pm on Tuesday. The CPN-UML has called for the formation of a parliamentary committee to investigate the 100 kg gold smuggling case. However, the ruling coalition is against forming any such committee.
According to Speaker Ghimire’s Secretariat, another meeting with the top leaders has been scheduled for 10 pm on Tuesday. Speaker Ghimire, however, remains optimistic that a consensus can be reached on Tuesday.
“The Prime Minister expressed gratitude for the initiative that I have taken to break the deadlock. I, in turn, thanked the leaders for their presence and active engagement in the deliberations. The senior leaders, including the Prime Minister, were engaged in a substantial discussion aimed at convening the parliament session today. However, the ruling and the main opposition parties were unable to bridge their differences,” Ghimire added.
