Govt set to propose labor agreements with Australia, Canada

KATHMANDU: Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security is preparing to propose labor agreements with Australia and Canada.

According to Dwarika Upreti, executive director of the Foreign Employment Board Secretariat, draft labor agreements are being prepared to develop Canada and Australia as new employment destination countries for Nepali migrant workers.

Earlier, the ministry had formed a committee to explore new employment destinations for Nepalis. The committee submitted its report recently, naming Canada and Australia as the potential new labor markets. Based on these recommendations, these countries have been selected as target destinations, according to Upreti.

“Many Nepalis, who went to Canada and Australia, are already employed there. The government is now preparing to send workers to these countries by signing labor agreements,” Upreti said. “Needful studies are underway.”

According to Upreti, the board is currently studying what types of workers are in high demand in Canada and Australia. “We are proposing these countries to send workers in sectors like information technology, industry, hospitality, driving and agriculture,” he added. “We plan to send a combined 3,000 workers to these countries annually.”

In the last fiscal year, the government signed labor agreements with Germany and Romania. While manpower companies are currently sending workers to Romania, the process to send workers to Germany has not begun yet.
