Govt forms taskforce to hold talks with agitating construction entrepreneurs

KATHMANDU: The government has formed a task force to hold discussions with agitating construction entrepreneurs.

Dr Damodar Regmi, secretary of the Public Procurement Monitoring Office, will lead the six-member task force, according to Narayan Prasad Bhatta, the spokesperson for the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers. According to Bhatta, the task force has been given 15 days to hold discussions with the construction entrepreneurs, study their grievances and provide a comprehensive report to the government.

Construction entrepreneurs have been staging protests against the government for the past many days demanding early release of payment for completed works, an adjustment in contract costs based on fuel prices and other factors and renewal of contracts of long pending contracts, among others.  They have been organizing protests outside the Prime Minister’s Official residence in Baluwatar with their equipment.

Earlier, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal had directed authorities concerned for early release of payment for all completed works. Dahal also directed the finance ministry and other line ministries to promptly address demands made by construction entrepreneurs.
