KATHMANDU: The Flood Forecasting Division under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has suspected a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) as the cause of the floods in the Thame River on Friday afternoon.
In a statement issued on Friday evening, the division suggested that one of the six glacial lakes in the river’s watershed may have burst its banks due to avalanches triggered by rising temperatures, consistent rainfall, or other factors.
“As a result of the incident, the water level in the Dudhkoshi River at Rabuwabazar, approximately 82 kilometers downstream, increased by nearly 1.2 meters in just half an hour at 5:40 pm. The water level is now gradually receding,” the statement added.
According to the department, its weather station in Phortse near Thame recorded 65mm of rain over the past seven days, while the average temperature had increased to 11 degrees Celsius since August 9 reaching 15.9 degrees Celsius on August 15.
