Ghising seeks German support for trolley bus system connecting three cities

KATHMANDU: The government has sought German assistance to operate a trolley bus service connecting the three major cities of western Nepal – Pokhara, Butwal and Bharatpur.

During a meeting with German Ambassador to Nepal, Udo Eugen Völz, in Kathmandu on Wednesday, Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Kulman Ghising, sought Germany’s support for the initiative.

Stating that road expansion work toward Pokhara, Butwal and Bharatpur is currently underway, Ghising said Nepal would need support to study and implement a trolley bus system linking the three cities, establish charging stations, manage the anticipated rise in electricity demand, and expand and upgrade the transmission and distribution network accordingly.

The meeting also covered topics such as Germany–Nepal economic cooperation, ongoing projects supported by Germany and potential areas of collaboration for energy transition.

Highlighting the Green Resilient Energy for Economic Prosperity in Nepal (GREEN+) Project in Pokhara, Butwal and Bharatpur, being implemented with support from Germany and the European Union, Ghising said the project was crucial for energy consumption and sustainability in the region. He added that immediate work would begin on expanding and improving the power transmission and distribution networks to promote the use of electricity for both electric vehicles and household purposes.

On the occasion, Ambassador Völz informed Minsiter Ghising that a German delegation would visit Nepal in December to review and identify new areas of assistance for the next two years.
