Fungfunge waterfall in Nuwakot awaiting visitors

There are two waterfalls in Nepal going by the name Fungfunge. While one cascades in Mikwakhola Rural Municipality in Taplejung, the other enchants visitors in Kakani of Nuwakot district. Both waterfalls derive the same name with the same cultural and religious significance.

Fungfunge of Taplejung stands tall at approximately 300 meters in height and was listed as one of the top 100 tourist destinations in Nepal to visit in 2022. It is the second tallest waterfall in Nepal, trailing the Hyatung Waterfall in Terhathum by only 65 meters.

Located approximately 40 kilometers north of the bustling Kathmandu Valley, the Fungfunge Waterfall in Nuwakot district is nestled in the lush green forest home to different species of flora and fauna. Cradled against a rocky mountain slope, the falls stand tall, reaching an estimated height of over a hundred meters. Despite its close proximity to the capital and the abundance of captivating panoramic views and natural wonders, this hidden gem remains relatively undiscovered. With its cascading waters, it is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular waterfalls not only in the vicinity of Kathmandu Valley but also in the entire Nuwakot region.

Embarking on a journey to this hidden wonder, visitors can reach the Fungfunge Waterfall in Nuwakot by personal vehicle or public bus up to Ranipauwa. From there, a picturesque descent down the hill awaits. The local community has thoughtfully constructed concrete steps and handrails, ensuring safe and easy access to this breathtaking spectacle. Along the way to Kakani, travelers can make a delightful stop in Okharpauwa, indulging in the delectable taste of trout fish.

The Fungfunge Waterfall undergoes seasonal transformations, with its water volume varying throughout the year. During winter, the flow decreases, while the rainy season brings forth a surge, enhancing its beauty. Visitors, especially youthful adventurers of all ages and genders, relish the opportunity to play and frolic in the cascading waters. They capture these precious moments on their cameras and share them on different social media platforms for their friends and families.

The Fungfunge Waterfall possesses untapped potential as an adventure sport tourist destination, particularly for canyoning. From July to October, thrill-seekers can immerse themselves in the exhilarating experience of navigating these waters. Authorities concerned should recognize and develop this potential, ensuring the necessary infrastructure and support are in place for visitors to partake in this exciting endeavor.
