Sabitra to play in French league, joins EA Guingamp

KATHMANDU: French women’s league club EA Guingamp has signed Nepali star striker Sabitra Bhandari.

The club stated in a post early Friday said the Nepali attacker Sabitra Bhandari ‘Samba’ has joined the French side.

The club also shared a video of Sabitra in the club’s dressing room and the ground.

The French Embassy in Kathmandu a few days ago stated that Sabitra has been signed by the French top division side. “Young Nepali football sensation, #SabitraBhandari, is set to make waves in France playing at the #EnAvantGuingamp! Join us in cheering for her as she embarks on this journey. This is also a testimony to the power of Nepali women in football!” the embassy posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Sabitra was signed by Israeli club Hapoel Raanana for the 2023/24 season. But she returned to Nepal after the league became uncertain following the Hamas attack on Israel.

Established in EA Guingamp, the Guingamp-based club plays in the French top division – Division 1 Feminine. It wonย the league in the 1988/89 season but is currently 10th in the league table with two wins, two draws, and eight losses. The Division 1 Feminine League has twelve teams.

A record scorer for the national side with 43 goals, Sabitra’s career took a new turn in 2018 when she signed for the Indian club Sethu FC. She dominated the Indian women’s league, scoring 15 goals in seven games in the 2018/19 season. She joined Gokulam Kerala FC in the next season and again became the top scorer with 16 goals, setting a record in the Indian women’s league by scoring 29 goals for Gokulam Kerala FC in the 2022/23 season.
