KATHMANDU: Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari is attending a program organized by the CPN-UML later this week.
Organizing a press meet in Kathmandu on Monday, the UML said preparations for the 1st National Women’s Convention to be held in Kathmandu on May 29-30 have been completed. Speaking at the press meet, Bhanu Bhakta Dhakal, coordinator of the organizing committee, said former President Bhandari will attend the convention as the Chief Guest while UML Chairperson KP Sharma Oli is scheduled to deliver a keynote address.
It was under the leadership of Bhandari, who was then the Vice-Chairperson of the UML, that the reinstated House of Representatives had adopted a resolution motion to ensure citizenship in the mother’s name, one-third of women’s participation at all levels of the state, annulment of discriminatory laws, and an end to violence against women in 2006.
This resolution laid the foundation for the inclusion of women’s rights as fundamental rights in the Constitution of Nepal, 2015.
Over 5,000 delegates are expected to attend the convention, according to Dhakal.
