Five Auto Shanghai launches that grabbed headlines

KATHMANDU: Auto Shanghai 2025, China’s largest automobile show, concluded on Friday.

The 10-day extravaganza showcased China’s dominance in the electric vehicle (EV) market, with nearly 300 new energy vehicles (NEVs) on display. Among more than 100 new models that were unveiled at the Auto Shanghai, Chinese automakers like BYD, XPeng and Zeekr, alongside global players like Audi and Lexus, presented cutting-edge EVs tailored for the Chinese market. .

While these vehicles are expected to influence the global EV market, it may take time before they are launched internationally.

Here are five standout electric cars from Auto Shanghai 2025, selected for their innovation, performance, and market potential:

1. AUDI E5 Sportback


Volkswagen’s AUDI sub-brand (distinct from Audi, with all-caps branding and no four-ring logo) unveiled the E5 Sportback at the Auto Shanghai. The sleek electric coupe-SUV is built on the advanced digitized platform with an 800-volt architecture. It boasts dual motors producing 764 hp and a CLTC range of 435 mile. Its AI-powered infotainment, featuring facial recognition for personalized settings and a massive dashboard-spanning screen, caters to China’s digital-first market. The car featuring Level 2++ automated driving is expected to go on sale later this year.

2. BYD Denza Z 


BYD’s premium Denza brand unveiled the Z electric supercar that targets luxury German brands like Porsche. The two-door coupe, with a massive rear wing and flared arches, delivers over 1,000 hp, which positions it as a rival to the Maserati Gran Turismo Folgore. Although launched as a concept model, Denza Z highlights BYD’s shift from affordable EVs to high-end performance.

3. Lexus ES Electric


The next-generation Lexus ES, which has been unveiled as a ‘global flagship’, introduces a fully electric variant alongside hybrid options. Inspired by the LF-ZC concept, the luxury sedan features advanced electrification tech and a refined design with a 685-kilometer range (CLTC) in its front-wheel-drive configuration. Its minimalist interior with large screens appeals to both Chinese and global markets. It is expected to gon sale in early 2026.

4. Zeekr 9X


The 9X is a full-size luxury SUV from Geely’s premium electric vehicle brand, Zeekr. According to automobile writers, the 9X, which is available in pure electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains, will compete with high-end SUVs like the Rolls-Royce Cullinan and Range Rover. It is set for global launch in the third quarter. The hybrid variant will have a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 205 kW, while it will have a 190 kW front motor and a 370 kW rear motor with a combined output of 660 kW. Batter and motor details of the electric variant haven’t been disclosed yet.

5. Mazda EZ-60


The EZ-60 is an all-electric SUV that Mazda developed with Changan Automobile, targeting China’s competitive mid-size SUV segment. It will directly compete with Tesla Model Y. With a claimed CLTC range of 600 km and sleek, modern styling, the SUV blends Mazda’s signature design with new battery tech. Although Mazda developed the car for the Chinese market, it is said to be considering whether to launch it in the global market. Mazda is also expected to launch its hybrid variant.
