KATHMANDU: The government is opening fair price shops targeting the upcoming Dashain, Tihar, and Chhath festivals starting from October 8.

These fair price shops will be jointly operated by three state-owned entities: Food Management and Trading Company (FMTC), Salt Trading Corporation (STC), and Dairy Development Corporation (DDC).

These shops aim to provide food products and other consumer goods at reasonable prices and reduce the monopoly of the private sector in the market to some extent.

The government has allocated Rs 23.22 million to FMTC to operate fair price shops.

FMTC and STC will jointly operate 35 fair price shops in the Kathmandu Valley, with additional shops planned to open in 42 other districts.
