England demolishes Iran 6-2 in its World Cup opener

KATHMANDU: England opened its 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign in style, defeating Iran 6-2 at Khalifa International Stadium on Monday.

Bakayo Saka scored two goals for England, while Jude Bellingham, Raheem Sterling, and substitutes Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish scored one each. Mehdi Teremi scored both goals for Iran.

Bellingham headed from the center of the box, utilizing a Luke Shaw header to put England 1-0 up in the 35th minute. Bukayo Saka doubled England’s lead in the 43rd minute when he fired into the top right corner after controlling Harry Kane’s superb cross into the box.

Saka scored his second in the 62nd minute before Mehdi Taremi pulled one back for Iran from the center of the box.

Raheem Sterling scored England’s third just before the break when he connected Hary Kanne’s cross from the center of the box.

Substitutes Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish joined the party scoring England’s fifth and sixth goals before Taremi scored from the spot for his and his country’s second goal.
