Elderly man abandoned in forest by family rescued

ITAHARI: An elderly man, aged 70, from Belbari Municipality-7 in Morang, was reportedly abandoned in the middle of the Chisang Community Forest by his son and daughter-in-law.

The incident came to light after the elderly man was found in the forest after four days and was rescued on Tuesday.

Dinesh Giri, chairperson of the Chisang Community Forest Users Group, said that the man is currently receiving treatment at Belbari City Hospital. “He was left in the middle of the forest where hardly anyone can reach,” Giri told Himal Press over the phone. “The incident came to light when the forest patrol team astride an elephant saw him in the middle of the forest and inquired about the situation.”

The elderly man told the patrol team that his son and daughter-in-law had abandoned him in the forest, Giri added. “I’ve been here for four days since my son and daughter-in-law left me here,” the man told the patrol team, according to Giri.

The man has visible injuries on his body. He is trembling and unable to speak properly, Giri added.

Ward Chairperson Sunita Chaudhary confirmed that the elderly man used to live in Dangi Tole in Ward No. 7. “I have asked the police to bring the son and daughter-in-law of the man to the ward office,” she added.
