KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has ordered the Election Commission to keep all its decisions related to the registration of the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) on a status quo until a final verdict is passed.

Hearing a writ petition filed by Janata Samajbadi Party, Nepal (JSP Nepal) Chairperson Upendra Yadav on Wednesday, a single bench of Justice Binod Sharma said it would decide whether to issue an interim order as demanded by the petitioner only after holding a discussion with the defendants.

The bench has scheduled the next hearing into the case for May 22. Likewise, the apex court has ordered the Election Commission to answer in writing why an interim order shouldn’t be issued as demanded by the petitioner within 15 days.

Yadav moved the apex court after seven lawmakers of the party, led by JSP Nepal Vice Chairperson Ashok Kumar Rai, announced a split from the party and registered the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) with the Election Commission. He has claimed in the petition that the registration of the party led by Rai was illegal and demanded scrapping of registration of the JSP.
