Dr Shambhu Prasad Acharya registers candidacy for WHO Regional Director

KATHMANDU: Dr Shambhu Prasad Acharya has officially put forward his candidacy for the position of Regional Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) South East Asia Region (SEAR).

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially informed the United Nations about Dr. Acharya’s candidacy on behalf of Nepal.

Among the 11 nations in the South East Asia Region, both Nepal and Bangladesh have submitted their nominations for the position. The foreign ministry has already initiated corresponded with the Nepali embassies in New Delhi, Dhaka, Colombo, and Bangkok to garner support for Dr Acharya.

The SEAR encompasses Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, North Korea, India, Indonesia, the Maldives, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Timor-Leste (East Timor).

Dr. Acharya boasts an impressive three-decade-long career within the United Nations, contributing significantly to the formulation of health policies, programs, and budgets. He envisions a South-East Asia Region in which health takes center stage across all sectors and policies. “My vision is a WHO South-East Asia Regional Office that is forward-looking, facilitating countries to achieve their national health objectives while aligning with the WHO’s triple billion goals and Sustainable Development Goals,” Acharya told RS news agency.
