KATHMANDU: Economist Dr Bishwo Poudel has resigned from a three-member committee formed to recommend candidates for appointment as the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) Governor.
According to a member of the finance minister’s secretariat, Dr Poudel submitted his resignation to Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel, who chairs the recommendation committee, on Sunday.
His resignation comes amid reports that the ruling coalition of CPN-UML and Nepali Congress (NC) has agreed to nominate Dr Poudel as the next NRB governor.
The coalition had previously picked NRB Executive Director Dr Gunakar Bhatta for the position. However, his resignation was not approved by Acting Governor Dr Nilam Dhungana Timsina. This prompted the coalition to seek an alternative.
Dr Poudel’s resignation means the cabinet will now need to reshuffle the recommendation committee.
Meanwhile, a writ petition has been filed at the Supreme Court, challenging the eligibility of former governor Maha Prasad Adhikari to serve on the recommendation committee.
