DIG Chand’s resignation rejected

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Police has declined to accept the resignation of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Arjun Chand.

Chand, the chief of the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) Security Office, had submitted his resignation on Friday. However, the Kathmandu Valley Police Office, Ranipokhari, rejected the resignation. “Since the resignation was not in the prescribed format, it was rejected,” said Additional Inspector General (AIG) Deepak Thapa, the head of the Kathmandu Valley Police Office.

Police sources say Chand was dissatisfied with the recommendations of a probe committee formed after a clash between police personnel and an immigration officer at TIA on January 26. The committee had implicated police personnel and recommended action against them.

However, Chand had told the media that he was stepping down due to personal reasons.

Chand assumed the role of chief of the TIA Security Office in April of the previous year.

A leaked CCTV footage from January 26 shows immigration officer Chhaya Lal Moktan refusing to cooperate with the police for a security check. Moktan can be seen kicking security personnel as the dispute escalated, prompting the police to retaliate against Moktan.

The probe committee recommended the suspension of Assistant Sub-Inspector Sanjaya Tamang and departmental action against two constables. Likewise, it suggested cautioning a Deputy Superintendent of Police.

Chand had conveyed to friends that the police personnel, who demanded that the immigration officer undergo a security check, should have been rewarded instead. He was upset as the police personnel did not receive support from the police leadership. It is understood that Chand decided to resign on moral grounds as police personnel under him were facing disciplinary action.

DIG Chand is the batchmate of the current police chief, IG Basanta Bahadur Kunwar. His term is set to expire in mid-March next year.
