KATHMANDU: A large number of people have gathered at Matatirtha to perform rituals such as tarpan and shraddha, and worship in memory of their deceased mothers.
According to Chandragiri Municipality Spokesperson Krishna Prasad Khadgi, crowds began forming as early as 3:00 am. “People bathe in the sacred pond, worship in the temple, and perform rituals,” he said.
Men and women who have lost their mothers visit the sacred site early in the morning to take a ritual bath and offer prayers to Harihar—Vishnu and Shiva.
There is a widespread belief that bathing in the Matatirtha pond brings peace to the souls of departed mothers.
The Matatirtha Festival Management Committee, along with local social organizations, has been mobilized for the management of the temple and pond premises.
