Curfew imposed in Barahathawa following death of a protester

KATHMANDU: The Sarlahi administration has imposed curfew orders in Barahathawa after a clash between locals and police resulted in the death of one individual on Friday.

The curfew orders will remain in place from 5:30 pm until 8 am on Saturday in Barahathawa market area, extending to Soti bridge in the north, the canal on the road to Hajariya in the west, the Hanuman temple in the south, to Brahmasthan on the road to Sitapur in the east.

Jaya Shankar Sah of Barahathawa Municipality-6 lost his life after being struck by a police bullet.

According to the District Police Office, Sarlahi, the police opened fire at protesters after they attempted to set Mayor Kalpana Katuwal’s residence on fire. “The protesters torched a car parked in front of the mayor’s residence,” said SP Shyam Kumar Mahato, the spokesperson for the Madhesh Provincial Police Office.

The situation in the area is still tense.

Locals took to the streets demanding the implementation of the Barahathawa Municipal Executive’s decision to hand over the primary health post in Barahathawa-6 to the Madhesh Provincial Government for upgrading it into a 50-room hospital.
