Continuous rainfall inundates Biratnagar

ITAHARI: Biratnagar, the capital city of Koshi Province, has been inundated due to continuous rainfall since Monday night.

According to the District Police Office, Morang, water levels in the Singhiya and Kesaliya rivers have risen significantly. The floodwaters have started to overflow into residential areas.

DSP Gyanendra Bahadur Basnet, the spokesperson for the District Police Office, Morang, said floodwaters from the Singhiya River has overflown to settlements around the Hatkhola area. “We have received information that some houses in the Hatkhola area are submerged. We’re still waiting for a complete report,” he said.

He added that security personnel have been deployed in anticipation of potential risks.

Most areas are waterlogged, severely affecting daily life. Locals claim that Biratnagar becomes waterlogged as soon as it rains due to a lack of proper drainage systems in the city.

Sanoj Mandal, a resident of Biratnagar-5, accuses elected representatives of merely conducting inspections during floods but remaining passive when it comes to finding long-term solutions. “There is a tendency to conduct inspections and show superficial work only after flooding begins. It is always the common people who suffer the most,” he added.

The metropolis has estimated that flood waters have entered into more than 500 houses in Biratnagar.

Santosh Neupane, the spokesperson for Biratnagar Metropolitan City, said schools and community buildings have been prepared as shelters for flood victims.
