KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has stated that the process of amending the constitution will begin soon.
Talking to journalists at the Biratnagar Airport on Friday, Deuba said that discussions would be held to secure a two-thirds majority in Parliament before initiating the amendment process.
He said the responsibility of the Chairperson of the National Assembly could be given to the Vice President by amending the constitution.
Deuba also expressed satisfaction with the positive public response to the coalition government of the two largest parties in the House of Representatives. He also thanked Prime Minsiter KP Sharma Oli for avoiding a loan agreement under Belt and Road Initiatives (BRI) during his China visit.
Responding to a query about backing General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa as his successor in the party, Deuba clarified that leadership transition will be discussed and determined only during the party’s general convention.
Deuba is in Biratnagar to inaugurate the first General Convention of the NC’s Koshi Province Committee scheduled for Saturday.
