Consensus eludes NC leaders on general secretaries’ reports

KATHMANDU: A meeting between the two general secretaries of the Nepali Congress (NC) and the party’s president and vice-presidents concluded without reaching a consensus on Tuesday.

The meeting ended inconclusively as the general secretaries, Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, were unwilling to revise their reports presented at the party’s Mahasamiti Meeting held in February.

In the ongoing central working committee meeting, leaders close to President Deuba demanded that the general secretaries revise their report and present it to the central working committee for approval. However, the general secretaries were not prepared to modify their reports.

President Deuba had called both vice-presidents, Purna Bahadur Khadka and Dhanraj Gurung, along with the two general secretaries, to his residence on Tuesday to resolve the matter. The five leaders met for discussions at 11 am today. However, they failed to reach a consensus. As a result, the central working committee meeting scheduled for Wednesday has been postponed. The meeting will now convene on Saturday.

“Discussions are ongoing. We will meet again on Thursday morning,” Vice-president Dhanraj Gurung told Himal Press over the phone. “Some issues raised in the central working committee were discussed on Tuesday. We will discuss the remaining matters on Wednesday.”

NC leaders are divided over whether to revise or simply approve General Secretary Thapa’s proposal of not forming alliances with any party in elections and General Secretary Sharma’s report which includes an exit policy for leaders.

Due to this controversy, the central working committee meeting which began on August 8 was adjourned until August 23. The meeting has now been further postponed till August 31.
