China closes Tatopani border

KATHMANDU: The Tatopani border point with China has been temporarily closed.

The border was closed following a notification from the Chinese side, according to customs officials.

Tatopani Customs Chief Dipendra Prakash Giri confirmed that Chinese authorities had temporarily closed the border. He said the Chinese side may have taken the decision anticipating possible flooding in the Bhotekoshi River at Tatopani.

According to Giri, Chinese authorities have moved customs operations and administrative staff to higher ground in view of the floods in Rasuwa and the damage caused by the disaster.

With the Rasuwagadhi border devastated by the Bhotekoshi floods and China’s decision to close the Tatopani border, Korala of Mustang remains the only operational trade pass between the two countries.
