KATHMANDU: Devotees offered prayers to the setting sun on the third day of Chhath celebrations on Thursday.
The festival ends after the devotees offer their prayers and arghya to the rising sun on Friday morning.
Devotees have gathered at ponds, rivers, lakes and other water bodies across the Tarai-Madhesh region and the rest of the country to offer their prayers and arghya to the setting sun. They have already placed the ritual offerings on the river banks in preparation for the prayers.
After offering prayers to the setting sun, the devotees leave the ritual offerings on the banks of water bodies and stay awake throughout the night.
President Ram Chandra Paudel visited Kamalpokhri in Kathmandu and offered prayers to the setting sun.
The final day of Chhath is known as Paraan. Before sunrise, family members gather at the water bodies again to worship the sun with devotion and faith.
A large number of domestic and foreign tourists have flocked to Janakpur to witness its renewed Chhath celebrations.
Special ghats have been prepared in Thapathali, Kamalpokhari and Gaurighat, among others, for Chhath celebrations in Kathmandu Valley.
