Central bank governors of Nepal, China discuss cross-border payment systems

KATHMANDU: Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) Governor Dr Biswo Nath Poudel held a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Pan Gongsheng in Tianjin, China, on Wednesday.

According to a statement issued by the central bank, during the meeting held on the sidelines of the 20th Asia-Pacific High-Level Meeting on Banking Supervision, the two governors discussed cross-border payment systems between Nepal and China, as well as opportunities and challenges related to bilateral investment and cooperation. They also exchanged views on expanding cooperation between the two countries in emerging financial sector practices, innovation, technological development, and other contemporary issues.

The governors also discussed facilitating QR code–based payments for citizens of both countries during travel and reducing transaction costs associated with such payments.

Speaking on the occasion, People’s Bank of China Governor Gongsheng expressed the Chinese central bank’s readiness to cooperate in the modernisation of electronic payment systems and to strengthen collaboration in this sector.

Similarly, Governor Poudel underlined the need to maintain continued cooperation, coordination and communication between the two central banks.
