KATHMANDU: Nepal exported cement worth Rs 423 million in the first nine months of the current fiscal year.

According to the Department of Customs, Nepal exported 272,328 tons of clinker worth Rs. 237.27 million and 192,001 tons of cement worth Rs. 185.91 million in the nine-month period.

Two cement companies have been exporting cement and clinkers to India after the government announced different incentives through the budget for the fiscal year 2022/23. Palpa Cement started exporting cement and clinker in July, while Arghakhanchi Cement started supplying cement and clinkers to India in September.

People in the industry say there is a huge demand for cement in northern India.

The government provides an 8% subsidy on the export of cement, clinker, and steel. Similarly, factories consuming electricity worth more than Rs. 100 million are also entitled to a 2-15% tariff waiver.

More than 60 cement factories are operational in different parts of the country. While 15 factories are producing both clinker and cement, the remaining others only grind clinkers. These factories have an annual capacity of 22 million tons.
